Milan: Cha Jun-hwan finished eighth in the men's short program of figure skating's team event at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games on Saturday, as South Korea failed to qualify for the next phase of the competition.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Cha scored 83.53 points at Milano Ice Skating Arena in Milan on Day 2 of the team event. By finishing third from last, he gave South Korea three points for a total of 14, placing them seventh among 10 teams.

Teams earned points based on the placements of individual skaters or couples, with first place worth 10 points, second place nine points, and so forth. After the short programs and rhythm dance segments, only the top five countries progressed to the free skate and free dance portions.

Without a pairs team competing, South Korea received zero points in that discipline. After Friday's skates, South Korea ranked seventh with 11 points - four from Hannah Lim and Quan Ye in ice dance, and seven from Shin Ji-a in women's singles.

Cha needed to deliver a strong performance to improve South Korea's standing, and he began well with a clean execution of a quadruple salchow. However, midway through the program, set to "Rain, In Your Black Eyes" by Ezio Bosso, Cha botched his takeoff for a triple axel and did not complete the jump, receiving zero points for that element.

While Cha received high scores for his step sequence and spins, he still fell about eight points short of his season best of 91.60.
