Cabinet Likely to Convene Friday to Discuss Special Probe Bill Against Yoon

Seoul: The Cabinet is expected to convene later this week to deliberate on an opposition-proposed bill seeking a special counsel investigation into the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law, a government official disclosed on Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the revised bill, put forward by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), was passed in a parliamentary plenary session on January 17, despite unanimous opposition from lawmakers of the ruling People Power Party. The opposition currently holds a majority in the 300-member parliament with 192 seats.

"It is likely that the Cabinet will convene an extraordinary session on Friday," a finance ministry official stated under the condition of anonymity, highlighting that the deadline for a decision to promulgate the bills or request parliamentary reconsideration is Sunday. The official, however, did not comment on whether acting President Choi Sang-mok would seek a parliamentary review.

Another finance ministry official mentioned that Choi is likely to veto the bill, similar to his previous veto of another DP-proposed bill concerning Yoon, emphasizing the necessity for bipartisan consensus.

The new bill excludes allegations that Yoon committed "treason" by attempting to incite a deliberate conflict with North Korea, which were part of a prior version rejected by Choi. The ruling party has criticized the DP-proposed bill as excessively broad and plans to propose its own version without insurrection charges against Yoon.
