Blinken Highlights Russia’s Plan to Exchange Satellite Technology with North Korea for Weapons

Seoul: U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Russia is planning to provide North Korea with advanced space and satellite technology in return for weapons and other equipment to support its war efforts in Ukraine. Blinken's comments came during a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul following discussions in Seoul, emphasizing the concern this poses for the United States and its allies, particularly South Korea and Japan.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Blinken expressed that there is evidence suggesting Moscow's intent to collaborate with Pyongyang in this domain. He warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin might be on the verge of shifting a long-standing policy by embracing North Korea's nuclear weapons program, formally known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). This development is a significant focal point for not only the United States but also South Korea and Japan, as they navigate the geopolitical implications.

In light of the recent political unrest in South Korea stemming from President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law attempt and subsequent impeachment, Blinken reassured that Washington maintains "full confidence" in the resilience of South Korea's democratic framework. He underscored the U.S.'s steadfast support for the Korean populace in their efforts to uphold democratic institutions and expressed trust that South Korea will adhere to its Constitution and rule of law.

Blinken's visit to South Korea is part of a broader three-nation tour that includes stops in Japan and France. This trip is anticipated to be his concluding international engagement as the leading U.S. diplomat under the current Biden administration.
