Lima: U.S. President Joe Biden has called on China to leverage its influence to prevent the potential escalation of Russia's conflict in Ukraine through the deployment of North Korean troops. This appeal, made during discussions at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, underscores concerns about the implications of military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, as reported by a senior U.S. official on Saturday. According to Yonhap News Agency, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan provided details on the conversation between Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. These discussions took place against the backdrop of growing anxiety over a possible military alliance between North Korea and Russia. Sullivan emphasized Biden's point that China, as a nation with significant influence, should act to prevent further escalation of the conflict, particularly through the introduction of additional North Korean forces. Biden highlighted the severity of North Korea's troop deployment, describing it as a "deeply dangerous" development that could enhance the likelihood of provocative actions by North Korea. Sullivan noted that the U.S. remains vigilant regarding potential provocations, including direct actions against South Korea or further missile tests and nuclear developments. The U.S. and South Korean governments have confirmed that North Korean troops have engaged in combat operations against Ukrainian forces in Russia's Kursk region. This action follows a strategic partnership treaty signed between Moscow and Pyongyang in June, reminiscent of their Cold War-era military alliance. During the summit, Biden reiterated the importance of preventing Sino-U.S. competition from escalating into conflict, while Xi expressed his opposition to economic "decoupling" between the two nations. Both leaders stressed the significance of maintaining stable U.S.-China relations for global stability.
