Assembly Speaker and U.S. Envoy Discuss Martial Law Rejection.

Seoul: National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-Shik and U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg engaged in phone talks on Wednesday regarding President Yoon Suk Yeol's attempted martial law declaration, which was dismissed by legislators, as reported by parliamentary officials. According to Yonhap News Agency, during their conversation, Ambassador Goldberg conveyed his belief that South Korea's parliament and political landscape will resolve the situation democratically. He also indicated that Washington had communicated similar sentiments to the South Korean government after the lifting of the martial law, emphasizing that the alliance between South Korea and the United States remains strong. Speaker Woo expressed gratitude towards the U.S. government for its prompt and appropriate response, urging continued support for the democratic capacity of South Korea. Additionally, Woo cautioned that the ongoing political developments should not compromise the security of the Korean Peninsula. Following the cessa tion of martial law by President Yoon's Cabinet earlier in the day, a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council expressed relief and reiterated that democracy is integral to the bilateral alliance.
