Seoul: A special counsel team has filed for an arrest warrant for a former justice minister over his alleged role in last year's short-lived martial law imposition, officials said Thursday. The team is seeking the arrest of former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae on charges related to his involvement in the martial law incident and allegations of abuse of power.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the investigation into the martial law turmoil revealed that Park Sung-jae is accused of instructing ministry officials to evaluate the deployment of prosecutors to a central investigative body under the martial law decree. Additionally, he allegedly directed an assessment of the detention capacities of correctional facilities in connection with the imposition of martial law.
The martial law was declared on December 3 by then-President Yoon Suk Yeol. However, the National Assembly voted to lift the martial law shortly afterward, leading to Yoon's removal from the presidency. The special counsel team has already questioned Park in person last month, though he reportedly denied any wrongdoing.
