Seoul: The Seoul city government announced plans to replace the aging baseball stadium in Jamsil with a new 30,000-seat dome arena by 2032 as part of a significant redevelopment effort. The current 25,000-seat Jamsil Baseball Stadium, which hosts the Doosan Bears and LG Twins of the Korea Baseball Organization, will be closed for the construction of the new stadium, projected to be the largest in the country.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the construction forms a part of the 3.3 trillion-won (US$2.25 billion) project aimed at redeveloping the Seoul Sports Complex site, originally built for the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics, and which currently houses the baseball stadium. The city recently concluded negotiations with its preferred bidder, a consortium led by Hanwha Corporation E and C Division, after engaging in 160 rounds of talks over the past four years. The privately funded project also envisions an exhibition center, a five-star hotel, and other commercial facilities on the 350,000-square-meter site.

During the construction phase, the Doosan Bears and LG Twins will temporarily relocate their home games to the nearby Seoul Olympic Stadium from 2027 to 2031. The new stadium will not only serve as the home for both teams but will also be utilized as a concert venue in the offseason.

Additionally, the city plans to implement unmanned aerial mobility systems to facilitate transportation between the complex and Gimpo International Airport in western Seoul, reducing travel time to approximately 15 minutes. The redevelopment project was first proposed in 2007 as part of a broader development strategy for the Jamsil area during Mayor Oh Se-hoon's first term. Despite facing several obstacles over the years, it gained momentum in 2021 when a preferred bidder was selected.
