Seoul: Acting President Choi Sang-mok on Monday expressed deep regret over the violent storming of a local court by protesters over the weekend, ordering authorities to prevent a repeat of such violence.
According to Yonhap News Agency, supporters of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol smashed windows and broke inside the Seoul Western District Court early Sunday, protesting the court's decision to formally arrest Yoon over his short-lived declaration of martial law on Dec. 3. Police have detained at least 86 protesters involved in the incident.
"I deeply regret the illegal and violent events that occurred at the Seoul Western District Court," Choi said during a safety monitoring meeting.
Choi ordered police and other agencies to strictly enforce the law to prevent the recurrence of such violence, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public order.
Prosecutors and police have pledged firm action against those involved in the violence, with officials stating that all detained suspects will be thoroughly investigated.
