Seoul: Yoon Seok-hwa, a leading figure in the theater world renowned for her significant contributions both on and off the stage, has died at the age of 69 following a courageous battle with a brain tumor. The veteran actress passed away at 9:54 a.m., surrounded by her family and friends at a hospital.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon had undergone surgery for a malignant brain tumor in October 2022. Despite her illness, she graced the stage for the final time in August 2023 with a brief guest appearance in the play "Toccata."

Born in Seoul in 1956, Yoon Seok-hwa began her illustrious career in 1975 with a debut in the play "Honey Taste." She gained widespread recognition for her performance in the production "Agnes of God," which became the longest-running play in Korean theater at the time, elevating her to stardom.

Yoon's influence extended through a series of hit productions including "Letters to My Daughter," "Princess Deokhye," and "Hamlet." Her talents were not confined to plays; she also made a significant impact in musicals, notably in "The Last Empress," "Guys and Dolls," and "Master Class."

Her remarkable career in theater earned her numerous accolades, including four Baeksang Arts Awards for Best Actress and the Korean Culture and Arts Award in 2009. Beyond her acting career, Yoon also made strides as a producer, director, magazine publisher, and appeared in films.

Yoon was also known for her advocacy work, particularly in raising public awareness of adoption, having adopted her son and daughter in 2003 and 2007, respectively.

Even during her illness, Yoon's passion for theater remained unwavering. In a phone interview with Yonhap News Agency, she shared her determination to stay connected with the stage, frequently attending plays despite her health challenges.

She is survived by her husband, son, and daughter, leaving behind a legacy that has deeply influenced Korean theater.
