Seoul: President Yoon Suk Yeol emphasized the importance of defense industry cooperation between South Korea and Saudi Arabia, stating that it will play a crucial role in enhancing bilateral relations across multiple sectors. During a meeting with Abdullah bin Bandar Al Saud, the Saudi minister of the National Guard, at the presidential office, Yoon described Saudi Arabia as a "key partner" for South Korea's economy and energy security. According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon noted that the defense collaboration would not only bolster Saudi Arabia's defense capabilities but also deepen ties between the two nations. Yoon referred to South Korea as a "best partner" for Saudi Arabia, highlighting the potential for cooperation in various areas. Abdullah bin Bandar Al Saud acknowledged the advanced level of existing defense cooperation and expressed his admiration for South Korea's sophisticated weapons systems, which he observed during firepower demonstrations earlier in the day. Ahead of the meeting, Abdullah wi tnessed an integrated firepower drill and displays of weapon systems, including the K9 self-propelled howitzer and K2 tanks. He also engaged in discussions with South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun regarding defense and security cooperation. In November 2023, LIG Nex1, a South Korean defense company, secured a US$3.2 billion contract to supply 10 Cheongung mid-range surface-to-air missile block II systems. Furthermore, the Korea Electric Power Corp., a state-run entity, has been shortlisted for significant renewable energy projects in Saudi Arabia, valued at 3 trillion won (approximately US$2.17 billion). As the head of the National Guard, Abdullah is responsible for a specialized military branch that handles internal security, protection of the royal family, and the safeguarding of key sites, including the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, as well as vital oil fields. The National Guard operates independently from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense, maintaining its own budget, forces, and command str ucture. During Abdullah's visit, he and Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun participated in a vehicle parade at the defense ministry compound in Seoul, underscoring the strengthening ties between the two nations.
