Seoul: Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire, will organize a symposium next week to discuss policy recommendations for the new Lee Jae Myung administration amidst increasing global security uncertainties stemming from the intensifying U.S.-China rivalry and rising protectionism.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the annual Korean Peninsula Symposium is scheduled to take place at Hotel Shilla in central Seoul on Thursday. The event is co-hosted by the Ministry of Unification and the Institute for National Security Strategy (INSS). This year, the symposium will focus on the shifting global order under the second Donald Trump administration and the new administration's response strategy.

The event will commence with a keynote speech by ruling party lawmaker Rep. Cho Jeong-sik and will include video messages from U.S. Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) and Rep. Young Kim (R-CA). Han Suk-hee, president of the INSS, will preside over the first session, which will feature a roundtable discussion on the effects of U.S. isolationism on trade, diplomacy, and security. Participants will include think tank researchers and directors from the United States, Japan, and South Korea.

The second session will address the theme of turning challenges into opportunities and will include policy proposals aimed at overcoming current crises. Former South Korean Ambassador to the U.S. Ahn Ho-young, former Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam, and former Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee will present policy recommendations for the new Lee Jae Myung administration during this session.

Yonhap has been hosting this symposium annually in collaboration with the unification ministry since 2015. The event aims to bring together experts, politicians, and government officials to examine the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and explore solutions to emerging issues.
