Yonhap to Host Forum on Security Strategy Amidst Fractured Alliances

Seoul: Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire, will host a symposium next week with a focus on navigating security policy directions amid fracturing alliances and growing supply chain instability.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the annual Korean Peninsula Symposium will take place at Lotte Hotel Seoul in central Seoul next Friday, co-hosted by the Ministry of Unification and the Institute for National Security Strategy. Unification Minister Chung Dong-young is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech on the policy direction of President Lee Jae Myung's government for North Korea and its peace strategy.

The symposium will also feature virtual participation from U.S. House Representatives Young Kim (R-CA) and Ami Bera (D-CA), who will join the opening ceremony with video messages emphasizing the importance of the bilateral alliance. A message from President Lee Jae Myung will be presented by Lee Kyu-youn, the senior presidential secretary for public relations and communication. Additionally, New National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik will deliver congratulatory remarks, and Yonhap News Agency President and CEO Hwang Dae-il will speak at the opening.

The forum is divided into two sessions. The first session will gather experts from the United States, Japan, China, and other nations to address the evolving dynamics of alliances in current international relations and discuss strategies of key nations concerning the shifting global alliance system. The second session will feature discussions among security experts and former ranking foreign policy officials on the growing uncertainties over economic and energy security, exploring how South Korea should chart its future course.

Yonhap has hosted the symposium annually with the unification ministry since 2015, aiming to bring together experts, politicians, and government officials to examine the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and explore solutions to emerging issues. The forum will be available for viewing via livestream on YouTube in both Korean and English.
