Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties between China and North Korea during a meeting with North Korean Premier Pak Thae-song in Beijing. The discussion took place ahead of the 65th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the two nations, highlighting a commitment to bolster socialist causes and modernization efforts.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Xi Jinping underscored the need for both countries to maintain strategic resolve and enhance confidence amidst a volatile international climate. He also called for an acceleration in the implementation of agreements made with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Premier Pak's visit to Beijing marks the first time in seven years that a North Korean government delegation has traveled to the Chinese capital for the treaty's anniversary, signifying the elevated status of this year's commemoration.

The Treaty of Friendship, originally signed on July 11, 1961, by North Korea's founder Kim Il-sung and then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, has been a cornerstone of the two nations' relationship. Recent summit talks between Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping in Pyongyang further pledged to strengthen ties through expanded exchanges across sectors such as economy and culture, alongside increased high-level visits.

The Korean Central News Agency reported on Pak's visit without detailing the schedule, and South Korea's unification ministry has stated it will keep a close watch on the developments. The ministry noted the significance of this year's delegation being led by the North Korean premier, a rank elevation from the vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly who attended in 2019.
