Goyang: A district court on Tuesday sentenced a woman to a fine of 6 million won (US$4,500) after finding her guilty of stalking actor Hwang Jung-min. The court found the woman in her 40s guilty of sending repeated text messages to the actor, which exceeded acceptable boundaries and constituted stalking.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Goyang branch of the Uijeongbu District Court ruled that the frequency and volume of the messages were sufficient to cause anxiety and fear to Hwang. The judgment noted the defendant was aware that Hwang did not wish for continued contact. Hwang had lodged a complaint against the woman in August of the previous year, leading to a summary order in February imposing a 3 million won fine. The woman, however, requested a formal trial.

The case gained public attention following the woman's claims on social media of having a personal relationship with Hwang, as she released alleged phone call recordings and text messages between them. Prosecutors initially sought a fine of 10 million won for her actions.

Hwang's agency expressed approval of the court's decision, emphasizing the seriousness of stalking and its potential threats to personal safety. Sem Company, the actor's agency, stated it plans to pursue further legal action against the woman for other alleged offenses.

Hwang Jung-min is renowned for his roles in major films such as "The Wailing" (2016) and "12.12: The Day" (2023).
