Vietnam Eyes Korean Collaboration in Nuclear Power Sector

Seoul:<Text>

Vietnam's top leader To Lam has expressed a warm welcome to Korean firms for their involvement in Vietnam's nuclear power ambitions, as revealed by a security adviser. President Lee Jae Myung and Lam reached an understanding to enhance cooperation in the fields of energy and infrastructure during summit discussions, with a particular focus on potentially reviving Vietnam's nuclear power program.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lam, who holds the position of general secretary of the Communist Party, extended an invitation to Korean companies to participate in Vietnam's energy transition. This includes the potential development of a nuclear power plant, as stated by National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac to reporters. Vietnam had previously halted plans in 2016 for its inaugural nuclear power plant in Ninh Thuan province due to financial limitations. However, the nation is now reconsidering nuclear energy as a means to address the growing electricity demand.</P&g t;

When questioned about the Ninh Thuan project, Wi mentioned that discussions are still in preliminary stages, primarily focusing on feasibility and associated risks. Concurrently, during the summit, Korea Electric Power Corporation and Vietnam National Industry-Energy Group entered into two memorandums of understanding. These agreements aim to carry out joint feasibility studies and explore financing options for potential nuclear power projects.

Wi further highlighted that critical mineral supply chains were pinpointed as another area for collaboration. Seoul and Hanoi plan to expand cooperation by establishing a technology cooperation center dedicated to critical mineral supply chains. Additionally, Lee and Lam engaged in dialogues concerning regional security and global matters, such as the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.

"The two leaders agreed to bolster joint efforts for peace and prosperity in the international community," Wi noted. He a dded that both leaders concurred on the importance of peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, recognizing its significance for the international community.
