USTR to Release Results of Section 301 Trade Investigations in Coming Weeks

Washington: U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that the Trump administration will release the results of its trade investigations into numerous trading partners, including South Korea, China, and Japan, over the next few weeks. These investigations, conducted under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, aim to address unfair trade practices, structural excess capacity, and forced labor-related issues. According to Yonhap News Agency, the investigations could lead to new tariffs or other trade measures. Greer stated in a CNBC interview that the investigations are targeting unfair trading practices by over 70 countries. The USTR will publish reports on their findings and propose measures, potentially including tariffs, to address identified issues. Greer emphasized that the administration is aware of persistent unfair trade practices globally, but he refrained from predicting the investigation outcomes. The Trump administration is considering tariffs to protect American manufacturing and address t he trade deficit caused by offshoring. The ongoing investigations aim to replace country-specific reciprocal tariffs invalidated by the Supreme Court in February. Section 301 allows the USTR to investigate unfair foreign trade practices on a country-by-country basis. South Korean products previously faced a 15 percent reciprocal tariff under a bilateral trade agreement with the U.S.
