US to Send Patriot Missile Systems to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced the deployment of Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine, marking a significant step in supporting Ukraine's efforts against Russian aggression. This decision follows a brief pause in arms shipments by the Trump administration and involves an agreement wherein the European Union will compensate the US for the weapons systems dispatched to Ukraine. Germany has also committed to financing at least two Patriot batteries as part of this arrangement.

According to Deutsche Welle, the Patriot missile system, developed by US aerospace and defense conglomerate Raytheon, is a sophisticated surface-to-air missile (SAM) system originally designed to intercept high-flying aircraft. In the 1980s, it was adapted to address the emerging threat of tactical ballistic missiles. Patriot systems are fully mobile and consist of a command center, radar station, and launchers. The system, priced at over $1 billion by the US-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in 2022, is already deployed by several countries worldwide, including Germany, Japan, Israel, and South Korea.

Germany's role in facilitating this deal is highlighted by the upcoming visit of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to Washington. Pistorius is expected to discuss the details of the arrangement with US defense officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The discussions will also address the broader US-NATO relationship and the status of a previously brokered agreement under Biden's administration to deploy US long-range missile systems in Germany.

While Germany has agreed to fund the Patriots for Ukraine, it has declined to send its long-range Taurus missiles. The Taurus KEPD 350, a German-Swedish cruise missile with a range of up to 500 kilometers, was previously considered for Ukrainian support. However, Germany has shifted its focus to aiding Ukraine in developing its own long-range capabilities. Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently warned Germany against providing Ukraine with Taurus missiles.

Ukraine's arsenal against Russian attacks includes various missile systems, such as the NASAMS, Russian-made Buks and S-300s, old-generation US-made Hawk missiles, and US-made ATACMS missiles, which have a range of 300 kilometers. The deployment of Patriot systems will enhance Ukraine's ability to defend against airborne threats, although smaller devices like mini drones may still pose challenges due to their maneuverability.

The Kremlin has expressed its disapproval of the Patriot deployment, with Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov commenting on the ongoing supply of US weapons to Ukraine. This development coincides with a seemingly strained relationship between Trump and Putin, as attempts to resolve the conflict have so far been unsuccessful. President Trump expressed disappointment with Putin, criticizing his contradictory statements and actions during the ongoing war.
