Seoul: Unionized railway workers have declared their intention to commence an indefinite strike starting next Tuesday, citing unresolved disagreements with the government regarding bonus payments.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Railway Workers' Union has stated that the strike will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday if the government does not alter its current position. This announcement follows a postponed strike initially planned for last week, which was deferred after a tentative agreement was reached on key issues with the government. However, on Friday, the union accused the government of failing to uphold its commitments.

A major sticking point in the negotiations is the compensation system that limits performance bonuses to 80 percent of base pay. The union is advocating for performance bonuses to be raised to 100 percent of base pay, aligning them with other public institutions.

"The essence of the current situation is an issue of trust, not wages," the union expressed in a statement. "How can rail workers trust the government and work when even the finance ministry does not keep its promise."

In addition to the strike, the union has organized rallies to be held near the presidential office in central Seoul on Tuesday.
