Seoul: Unionized cargo workers announced Wednesday that they have reached a tentative agreement with BGF Logis, the logistics arm of the CU convenience store chain. This development comes in the wake of a tragic incident where a union member was fatally struck by a truck during a demonstration near one of the company's logistics centers.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the incident occurred last Monday when a 2.5-ton truck hit participants at a cargo worker rally near a CU convenience store logistics hub in Jinju, located approximately 290 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The accident resulted in the death of a union member in his 50s and injured two other individuals.

The rally aimed to press BGF Logis to engage in direct negotiations with unionized cargo truck drivers who are not directly employed by the company. This demand came after the recent passing of the yellow envelope act, which increased accountability for prime contractors regarding subcontracted workers and limited the ability of businesses to claim damages from striking workers.

The Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union stated that an agreement was reached during a meeting with BGF Logis representatives early Wednesday. An official signing ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. The union also indicated that blockades at major logistics centers, initiated earlier this month, will be dismantled once the agreement is officially signed.

Unionized workers reportedly sought improved working conditions, including increased days off, higher freight rates, and a prohibition on damage claims against union members.

The fatal accident reportedly occurred as rallygoers attempted to prevent a truck, operated by a non-union worker, from leaving the site amid the ongoing demonstration by unionized cargo truck drivers. The union has criticized the police for allegedly permitting trucks to depart the area during the rally.
