Unification Minister Supports Scaled-Back Drills to Foster US-North Korea Dialogue

Seoul: Unification Minister Chung Dong-young expressed hope on Wednesday that the decision to scale back military drills between South Korea and the United States might pave the way for dialogue between North Korea and Washington. This statement was made during a parliamentary committee meeting, following the announcement that the annual summertime military exercise would be cut short, concluding a week earlier than planned.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Chung backed U.S. President Donald Trump's directive to reduce the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise. Trump described the reduction as a step towards making things safer, which Chung noted aligns with the exercise's core objective of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. He reiterated this sentiment during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on foreign and unification affairs.

In a recent Truth Social post, President Trump instructed the U.S. military to scale back the combined exercise, stating that the drills send an "inappropriate and hostile" message to North Korea. Responding to criticism that the move prioritizes North Korea's interests over South Korea, Trump maintained that it enhances security. Chung expressed hope that this reduction might lead to dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea and improve inter-Korean relations.

Chung further elaborated on the potential for renewed dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang, emphasizing that the scaled-back drills offer a chance for talks. He noted that North Korea has consistently criticized the joint exercises as central to Washington's hostile policy towards it. Earlier this year, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un mentioned that Pyongyang would have no reason not to engage with the U.S. if Washington withdrew its hostile stance.
