Seoul: The U.S. Treasury Department has announced a significant update to its sanctions list, removing 84 targets and consolidating duplicate entries, including a North Korean firm associated with Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. This move is part of a broader sanctions "modernization" initiative aimed at aligning with current national security and foreign policy priorities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) stated that the targets removed from the list were no longer considered priorities, as they include deceased individuals, defunct entities, and targets that were sanctioned several decades ago. This update signifies an effort to streamline and update the sanctions list, ensuring that it reflects current geopolitical realities.
One of the notable entries removed is the Korea Tangun Trading Corp. (KTTC), a North Korean entity that had been sanctioned by both the U.S. government and the U.N. Security Council in 2009 due to its involvement in the North's weapons of mass destruction programs. OFAC clarified that KTTC is also known by other names, such as Korea Kuwolsan Trading Corp., the Second Academy of Natural Sciences Foreign Affairs Bureau, and Korea Ryenhap 2 Trading Corp.
In May, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the importance of the sanctions modernization effort. He stated that it aims to ensure U.S. sanctions remain "targeted, effective and aligned with U.S. economic, foreign policy and national security priorities," highlighting the evolving nature of global threats and the need for responsive policy measures.
