Seoul: A special police investigation team launched eight months ago to investigate cases referred by three special counsel teams terminated its operations Tuesday, the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) said.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the KNPA Special Investigation Headquarters was established on December 1 of the previous year to address unsolved cases forwarded by the special counsel teams led by Cho Eun-suk, Min Joong-ki, and Lee Myeong-hyeon. These teams were investigating significant allegations, including the alleged insurrection involving former President Yoon Suk Yeol, issues related to former first lady Kim Keon Hee, and the 2023 death of a Marine.

The investigation headquarters initially comprised a maximum of 109 members and was reduced to 71 members by the time of its disbandment. Over its operational period, the team managed a total of 192 cases handed over by the three special counsel teams. These cases were reclassified into 137 distinct cases by merging duplicates.

Of these cases, 121 have been concluded. This includes 16 that were sent to the prosecution, 54 that were transferred to other agencies, and 51 that were closed without any referral to the prosecution or without suspects being booked.

Throughout its investigation, the team conducted inquiries with 46 suspects a total of 62 times and interviewed 209 witnesses on 220 occasions. Additionally, they carried out 16 search and seizure operations to gather further evidence in their probes.
