Gunsan: The U.S. military in South Korea has officially launched an expeditionary reconnaissance squadron at the U.S. air base in Gunsan, confirming the deployment of MQ-9 Reaper drones on the Korean Peninsula. This move, as announced by the U.S. Seventh Air Force, marks a significant development in the region.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lt. Col. Douglas J. Slater has taken command of the newly established 431st Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron. This marks the first activation of a squadron specifically in charge of MQ-9 operations on the Korean Peninsula, despite the drones being previously deployed on a rotational basis.
The Seventh Air Force stated that the MQ-9 operations will support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance priorities for both the U.S. and Korea across the Indo-Pacific theater. This deployment is expected to enhance the joint capability to respond to threats and emerging situations, further strengthening the alliance between the two nations.
The MQ-9 Reaper, designed for surveillance and attack missions, is capable of long-distance flight. It is anticipated to conduct surveillance on North Korea and monitor activities in the Yellow Sea, including those of China.
Lt. Col. Slater emphasized the importance of the deployment, stating, "Deploying the MQ-9 brings a powerful capability to the region. We're here to support the mission, deepen cooperation, and demonstrate our shared commitment to maintaining security and stability across the Indo-Pacific."
