U.S.-Led Armistice Talks with North Korea Reopen After Long Suspension

Seoul: The U.S.-led United Nations Command has reopened armistice talks with China-backed North Korea after a lengthy suspension. These discussions, which initially commenced in 1951, have been ongoing intermittently until a cease-fire agreement was finally signed on July 27, 1953, bringing an end to the three-year Korean conflict.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the year 1974 saw South and North Korea initiating Red Cross talks with the aim of reuniting millions of family members separated by the division of the Korean Peninsula. However, these negotiations were short-lived, breaking down due to escalating political and military tensions.

In 1990, South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong officially launched a trilateral commercial data communications service through a three-way submarine fiber-optic cable network. This development marked a significant step in regional cooperation and technological advancement.

By 1993, U.S. President Bill Clinton visited South Korea for a summit with President Kim Young-sam, where they agreed to discuss initiating a multilateral security dialogue in Northeast Asia. They also pledged to maintain close consultations to address the North Korean nuclear arms issue.

The year 2007 was notable for golfer Choi Kyoung-ju, who clinched the inaugural AT and T National hosted by Tiger Woods, marking his second PGA Tour victory of the season and his sixth career title.

In 2008, six-nation talks aimed at denuclearizing North Korea resumed after a nine-month hiatus. The primary agenda was verifying North Korea's past and current nuclear activities, in accordance with a 2005 agreement under which North Korea agreed to disarm in exchange for energy aid and other benefits.

2012 witnessed Park Geun-hye, a five-term lawmaker and daughter of former authoritarian President Park Chung-hee, officially announcing her candidacy to become South Korea's first female president. She later won the presidential election on December 19.

In 2018, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to more than double bilateral trade to over US$50 billion by 2030 during a summit in New Delhi. They also pledged to further upgrade their diplomatic relationship.

In a tragic event in 2020, Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon was found dead in the woods of Mount Bugak near his official residence. The mayor had been under investigation following allegations of sexual harassment made by his former female secretary, which included accusations of unwanted physical contact and inappropriate messages.
