Washington:Two Democratic lawmakers have expressed their approval of President Donald Trump's recent initiatives to renew discussions with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. They emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are crucial for safeguarding U.S. national security interests.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Representatives Brad Sherman and Judy Chu, both from California, released a joint statement highlighting their belief that diplomacy with North Korea is essential to address issues of nuclear proliferation and to work towards lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
President Trump has indicated his willingness to meet with Kim later this year. The White House has confirmed that Trump is open to engaging in talks with the North Korean leader without preconditions.
The lawmakers urged President Trump to guide the State Department in preparing for substantive and effective discussions with North Korea. They suggested measures such as reconsidering the travel ban on U.S. citizens to North Korea, pursuing a formal treaty to officially end the Korean War, and initiating negotiations to set up liaison offices in each country.
These steps, they believe, would create a foundation for a productive summit between President Trump and Kim Jong-un, advancing U.S. interests in the process.
There is ongoing speculation that President Trump might attempt to reconnect with Kim during an upcoming visit to Asia, potentially during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, scheduled for November.
During his first term, Trump met with Kim three times: in Singapore in June 2018, in Hanoi in February 2019, and at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom.
