Among them are works by prominent figures in modern and contemporary Korean art, such a s Yun Hyong-keun, Park Rae-hyun, and Chang Uc-chin. The museum's collection also includes pieces by Korean artist Kim Whan-ki, Korean-American pioneer Paik Nam-june, and international artists Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, and Henri Matisse.
RM contributed to the exhibition by writing texts and artwork descriptions in both Korean and English, and he provided his voice for audio guides recorded in both languages. He also selected the music to be played in the galleries.
"This is the first time I'm sharing my collection under my name," RM stated in a press release. He expressed that few things reveal a person as honestly as a collection they have built over time, making this exhibition a significant self-introduction.
The 32-year-old explained that his collection includes many works by modern and contemporary Korean artists whose names might be less known outside Korea. He has collected them to offer a better perspective and sensibility, a process that culminated in this exhibition.
This collaboration is the first between SFMOMA and a K-pop artist since the museum's founding. Castillo commented on the museum's website that the show offers a unique entry point, inviting visitors to explore the galleries and form their own connections to the artworks, much like RM did.
