WASHINGTON: The United States has announced a new semiconductor export control package aimed at China, specifically targeting high-end chips used in artificial intelligence. The restrictions are expected to impact major South Korean manufacturers. According to Yonhap News Agency, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security detailed the package in the Federal Register, outlining limitations on the export of high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. Leading the HBM market are two South Korean firms, Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix, along with Micron Technology. The introduction of these controls comes as President Joe Biden approaches the end of his term, with President-elect Donald Trump anticipated to adopt a stringent policy approach towards China.
