Seoul: Shin Moon-sun, a former television football commentator and current academic, has declared his candidacy for the presidency of the Korea Football Association (KFA). Shin's announcement has intensified the race for the leadership of the national football governing body, making it a three-way contest with the current president, Chung Mong-gyu, and Huh Jung-moo, a former men's national team head coach, also vying for the position. According to Yonhap News Agency, Shin, aged 66, expressed a strong desire to transform the KFA, criticizing the current leadership. He emphasized the need for change, stating, "The KFA must change. This Chung Mong-gyu regime must be the last one run by a corporate executive." He further committed to being a hands-on leader, saying, "I will be the type of CEO who gets his hands dirty." The election is set for January 8, 2025, with the new president's term commencing on January 22. Prospective candidates are required to register between December 25 and 27. Shin's candidacy bring s his extensive experience in the football world into play. His career began with a three-year stint in the K League starting in 1983, followed by a successful tenure as a TV analyst in the late 1980s. He later transitioned into academia, becoming a professor at Myongji University in 2011, and served as CEO of K League club Seongnam FC in 2014. Shin's previous bid for a leadership role in South Korean football was in 2017 when he lost the election for commissioner of the K League. Despite this setback, Shin remains determined to lead the KFA, criticizing Chung's leadership as detrimental. He accused Chung of lacking understanding in both technical and business aspects of football, which he claims led to significant setbacks, such as South Korea's failure to qualify for the Olympics and a decline in the commercial value of the national team. Shin positions himself as the ideal candidate to revitalize the KFA, leveraging his deep understanding of football's technical elements and his business acumen. He pledg ed to stabilize the organization swiftly and focus on expanding the football market, aiming to serve fans, athletes, and corporate sponsors effectively.
