Seoul: Two general-level military commanders have been dismissed as a disciplinary action for infiltrating the National Assembly and attempting to arrest high-profile politicians during the brief period of martial law in late 2024, military sources reported.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the defense ministry took action against Brigadier General Lee Sang-hyun, the former commander of the 1st Special Forces Brigade. Lee is accused of leading troops into the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting against the martial law decree. Alongside him, Rear Admiral Kim Dae-woo, the former investigative chief of the Defense Counterintelligence Command, was also dismissed. Kim is suspected of orchestrating a team to arrest politicians during the martial law period.

Both Lee and Kim are currently standing trial for their involvement in the martial law imposition. The defense ministry, in its statement, mentioned imposing "heavy" disciplinary measures against the two officers but did not disclose their names, ranks, or the specific nature of the punishment.

This dismissal is part of a broader effort by the military to address and punish those involved in the martial law declaration. Previously, former top commanders of the Defense Counterintelligence Command and the Army Special Warfare Command were also removed from their positions.
