Trump’s Proposed Tariffs Threaten South Korea’s Trade Relations and Investments.

Seoul: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has sparked controversy with his plan to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, raising alarm among key trading partners, including South Korea. Announcing the proposal on Truth Social, Trump cited concerns over "ridiculous open borders" and linked the tariffs to illegal immigration and drug-related crime. This move threatens to escalate into a broader tariff war, potentially impacting countries with trade surpluses with the U.S., such as South Korea. According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea is particularly vulnerable to Trump's proposed tariffs due to its significant investments in Mexico and close trade ties with the U.S. As Mexico's second-largest foreign investor in 2023, South Korean companies have invested over 1 trillion won ($716 million), particularly in sectors like automotive and home appliances. The imposition of a 25% tariff on goods manufactured in Mexico could severely impact these businesses, forcing them to reconsider their investm ent strategies and possibly restructure global supply chains. South Korea's trade relationship with the U.S. is also at risk, given its trade surplus and the potential scrutiny of the KORUS Free Trade Agreement under Trump's administration. Trump's past criticisms of trade imbalances and demands for greater financial contributions from South Korea for U.S. military presence add further strain to bilateral relations. In response, the South Korean government, led by the Yoon Suk Yeol administration, must proactively engage with the incoming U.S. administration, emphasizing the mutual benefits of economic cooperation and the strategic importance of their alliance. To mitigate these challenges, South Korea should adopt a flexible and pragmatic approach, offering mutually beneficial proposals in areas like technology, clean energy, and regional security. This strategy will require diplomatic skill and strategic foresight to navigate the complexities of international trade and maintain a strong economic partnersh ip with the U.S. amidst the looming trade war and tariff threats.
