Seoul: U.S. President Donald Trump is anticipated to visit South Korea later this month for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings, during which he is expected to hold a summit with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, as announced by the foreign ministry on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the foreign ministry addressed concerns from a local news report suggesting that Trump's visit might be brief, potentially affecting President Lee's diplomatic initiatives during the global meetings. South Korea is set to host the APEC summit on October 31 and November 1 in Gyeongju, with the APEC CEO Summit occurring from October 29 to 31.
A foreign ministry official indicated that President Trump is likely to visit during the APEC summit week, from October 27 to November 1, and attend various APEC events. The official also mentioned that a summit between South Korea and the U.S. is anticipated during this visit, highlighting the trust and bonds formed between the two leaders during President Lee's visit to Washington in August. Additionally, Trump may engage in diplomatic events with other leaders.
The official noted the significance of Trump's visit in ensuring reciprocal visits by the South Korean and U.S. leaders within the initial five months of President Lee's administration. The South Korean government is preparing to offer respectful treatment and organize thorough schedules for the occasion.
Seoul and Washington are reportedly discussing a two-day visit by Trump from October 29 to 30, coinciding with the APEC CEO Summit. The U.S. president is expected to participate in the CEO Summit and other events but may not attend the APEC summit itself.
As the chair of this year's APEC, South Korea intends to continue discussions with APEC member countries to deliver a message promoting cooperation and communication for mutual prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.
