Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning on Monday, stating that any country attempting to undermine last week's Supreme Court decision against his administration's emergency tariffs will face significantly elevated tariffs. This announcement came in the wake of the court's ruling, which struck down Trump's application of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to enforce country-specific tariffs.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Supreme Court's decision marked a significant blow to Trump's trade strategy, which has relied heavily on the imposition of reciprocal tariffs. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump declared, "Any Country that wants to 'play games' with the ridiculous supreme court decision, especially those that have 'Ripped Off' the U.S.A. for years, and even decades, will be met with a much higher Tariff, and worse, than that which they just recently agreed to." He emphasized the seriousness of his warning with an emphatic "BUYER BEWARE!!!"

The court's ruling has prompted concerns about its implications for bilateral trade and investment agreements that have been negotiated using these tariffs as a leverage point. In response to the setback, Trump announced his intention to impose a temporary 15 percent global tariff and explore other trade measures under different legal frameworks to sustain his tariff-centric trade policy.

Trump has been utilizing tariffs as a tool to address the U.S. trade deficit, stimulate domestic manufacturing and foreign investment, and enhance federal revenue. These efforts are also aimed at bolstering support ahead of the midterm elections, which are viewed as a critical test of public opinion on his administration's policies.
