Athens: U.S. President Donald Trump aims to secure a "grand bargain" with Iran rather than settling for a "small deal," according to Vice President JD Vance. This statement comes amidst growing speculation that peace talks between Washington and Tehran may soon resume.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Vance's comments were made during a public event at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. The remarks follow unsuccessful negotiations between the United States and Iran in Pakistan over the weekend, with their current two-week ceasefire set to expire next week.

Vance emphasized that Trump is not interested in a limited agreement and seeks a comprehensive peace agreement. He outlined that the president's offer involves treating Iran "economically like a normal country" if it, in turn, behaves like one.

Vance elaborated that the sticking point in reaching a deal lies in achieving assurances that Iran will not pursue nuclear weapons or sponsor terrorism. The ultimate goal is to allow the Iranian people to prosper and integrate into the global economy.

Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, accompanied Vance in the initial negotiations with Iran held in Islamabad. Vance highlighted the necessity of an "affirmative" commitment from Iran to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

The New York Times reported that during negotiations, the U.S. proposed a 20-year suspension of all nuclear activities by Iran. In contrast, Iran countered with a proposal to suspend its nuclear activities for up to five years, based on insights from senior Iranian and U.S. officials.

In a subsequent phone call with the New York Post, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with reports that the U.S. had requested a two-decade suspension of Iran's uranium enrichment. He reiterated his stance against Iran possessing nuclear weapons and voiced discontent with the 20-year proposal.
