Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to meet at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea. According to Yonhap News Agency, Trump made this announcement through a social media post after a phone conversation with Xi, describing the talks as "very productive." The APEC summit is scheduled to take place in Gyeongju, South Korea, from October 31 to November 1. Trump expressed his anticipation for the meeting, stating, "Both look forward to meeting at APEC!" The nature of the meeting between Trump and Xi remains uncertain, whether it will be a formal summit or an informal encounter on the sidelines of the APEC event. Should the meeting occur, it would be their first face-to-face interaction since the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan, in June 2019. Trump also mentioned plans for further engagement, indicating he will visit China early next year, and Xi will visit the United States "at an appropriate time. " In the discussion, both leaders addressed "many very important issues," including the ongoing concerns surrounding the social media platform TikTok, trade relations, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and the fentanyl crisis. Trump noted that the call was "a very good one" and mentioned future phone conversations, expressing appreciation for the ongoing negotiations regarding TikTok. Last year, the U.S. Congress passed legislation to ban TikTok unless its parent company, ByteDance, relinquishes control, citing data security concerns. Trump has delayed implementing this ban as discussions continue. After recent trade talks in Madrid, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a "framework" for resolving the TikTok issue with Beijing. China's Xinhua News Agency reported that Xi highlighted Beijing's stance on TikTok, emphasizing respect for the company's autonomy while supporting negotiations that align with market rules and mutual interests. On trade matters, Xi urged the U.S. to refrain from "unila teral" trade restrictions to safeguard progress achieved through prior negotiations. The news agency described the leaders' conversation as "pragmatic, positive and constructive."
