Seoul: Christopher Nolan's epic film "The Odyssey" premiered at the top of the weekend box office in South Korea, surpassing the previous leader, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," according to figures released on Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Hollywood blockbuster garnered 1,333,437 admissions over the weekend, increasing its total admissions to 1,874,731 as of Sunday. These numbers were provided by the Korean Film Council, which tracks admissions from Friday through Sunday for its weekend chart.

Released last Wednesday, "The Odyssey" narrates the challenging homecoming journey of Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, the Greek king of Ithaca, following his victory in the Trojan War. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya.

Meanwhile, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" attracted 1,264,531 admissions over the weekend, bringing its cumulative admissions to 5,911,933.

In third place, the Korean animated film "Heartsping Of Love 2: The Legend of the Whale Jewel" drew 289,451 admissions over the weekend, with the alien epic "Hope" following with 100,889 admissions.

As of 8:14 a.m. Monday, "The Odyssey" accounted for 63.5 percent of ticket presales, indicating a promising performance, while "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" held 21.2 percent, according to the data.
