Seoul: The upcoming film "The Informant," featuring "Squid Game" star Heo Sung-tae, attempts to deliver a lighthearted crime comedy but falls short due to a muddled plot and lackluster humor.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the film revolves around the character Nam-hyuk, played by Heo Sung-tae, an inept detective known for constantly bungling investigations. His desire to earn quick money to leave his unstable job leads him to rely on Tae-bong, a quick-witted informant portrayed by Jo Bok-rae. The duo's mission to dismantle a smuggling ring inadvertently entangles them in a larger conspiracy involving a ledger with damning evidence against a powerful gang leader.

The narrative becomes convoluted with numerous double-crosses and blown covers, leaving audiences puzzled about which characters to support. Nam-hyuk's repeated investigative failures, along with unnecessary and awkward interactions with his co-worker So-young, played by Seo Min-ju, detract from the film's comedic intent. So-young's character, the only female presence in the story, unfortunately, remains underutilized and fails to add depth to the plot.

The film's lack of a memorable antagonist weakens its standing as a crime story, missing the opportunity to elevate the performances of the lead actors despite their talent. Jo Bok-rae's portrayal of Tae-bong, however, stands out as a highlight, infusing the film with humor and vitality. Known for his role in Disney+'s "Moving," Jo's performance demonstrates his potential beyond being a mere scene-stealer.

By the film's conclusion, it is Jo's engaging performance that leaves a lasting impression on audiences. "The Informant" marks the feature debut of director Kim Seok and is a significant leading role for Heo Sung-tae, who gained international recognition from "Squid Game."

Having premiered at the 24th New York Asian Film Festival in July, "The Informant" is set to be released locally next Wednesday.
