SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics Collaborate on 6G AI-Powered Network

Seoul: SK Telecom Co. and Samsung Electronics Co. announced they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered radio access network (RAN) to spearhead next-generation 6G network technologies.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the partnership will focus on researching and demonstrating core 6G technologies, including AI-based channel estimation technology, distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission and reception technology, and AI-RAN-based scheduler and core network technology.

SK Telecom plans to use its nationwide network operation experience to provide data and build demonstration infrastructure, while Samsung Electronics will work on advancing AI channel estimation models and distributed MIMO algorithms. The joint research efforts will be led by SK Telecom and Samsung Research, the research and development arm of Samsung Electronics.

AI-based channel estimation utilizes AI to predict and correct signal distortions, enhancing data transmission accuracy. Distributed MIMO technology facilitates stable, ultra-high-speed communication even in densely populated areas. Meanwhile, AI-RAN-based scheduler and core network technology enable the network to automatically decide when and where to send data, thereby improving resource efficiency.

Both SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics are members of the AI-RAN Alliance, which was established last year to promote 6G research by integrating AI with wireless communication technologies. The companies have been expanding their cooperation since joining the alliance.
