Seoul: The suspension of "Project Freedom," a United States-led operation aimed at escorting ships through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, has nullified the need for South Korea to assess its involvement in the initiative, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac stated on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the announcement came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that the operation would be temporarily paused, mere days after its commencement. The decision to suspend the project has prompted a shift in plans for Seoul, which had initially intended to deliberate on its participation.
The national security adviser, addressing reporters, emphasized that the halt in operations meant that a review by South Korea regarding its potential involvement was no longer necessary. "Because the operation has been halted, (a review of whether to participate) has become not necessarily needed," Wi Sung-lac remarked, underlining the change in circumstances following the U.S. decision.
