Seoul: The Supreme Court announced plans to establish a dedicated tribunal specifically for handling charges of insurrection, treason, and mutiny. This initiative arises amidst the ruling Democratic Party's (DP) efforts to create a special bench for cases related to former President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the establishment of this tribunal follows the DP's controversial push for a bill that seeks to form a special insurrection tribunal. Critics argue that the bill might be unconstitutional, pointing to perceived delays and potential unfairness in the trials of individuals implicated in the martial law case. The DP has indicated its intention to introduce the bill at the National Assembly next Tuesday, with a vote anticipated to occur the following day.

The National Court Administration (NCA), operating under the Supreme Court, has announced its decision to formulate guidelines for the new tribunal. This tribunal will address cases of insurrection, treason, and rebellion under military law, recognizing their significant national importance and urgency. An official from the NCA stated, "The guidelines are designed to resolve concerns from the people and the National Assembly on the swift and fair proceedings of trials of national importance." These guidelines will be implemented following an administrative notice period of at least 10 days.

This development comes in the wake of concerns expressed earlier this month by representative judges from courts across the nation. They voiced apprehensions that the DP-led bill might compromise the independence of the judicial system.
