Seoul: Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae has committed to pursuing the "right path" to judicial reform, emphasizing the need for comprehensive discussions with the National Assembly. This commitment comes as the ruling Democratic Party (DP) aims to pass a series of reform bills that propose significant changes, including more than doubling the number of Supreme Court justices.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Chief Justice Cho made these statements during a ceremony honoring Korean Court's Day. This marks his first public address concerning the DP's judicial reform initiatives. During his speech, he highlighted the judiciary's role in facilitating open communication and persuasion to represent its opinions effectively to the National Assembly.

Cho further emphasized that the judiciary has been actively engaging with various stakeholders, including members of the legislature, government, academia, and media, to identify the most suitable approaches for achieving judicial justice. He reiterated the judiciary's commitment to ensuring that its perspectives are considered, drawing on historical examples where the judiciary played a significant role in enhancing key judicial systems.

In his address, Chief Justice Cho reaffirmed the importance of maintaining the constitutional principles of separation of powers and judicial independence while navigating the reform process. The judiciary, he assured, will remain steadfast in its efforts to contribute positively to the dialogue surrounding judicial reform, prioritizing the interests of the people.
