Supernatural Horror Film ‘Salmokji’ Surpasses 3 Million Admissions

Seoul: The supernatural horror film "Salmokji: Whispering Water" has captivated over 3 million viewers, just about a month after its release, data revealed Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean film accumulated 147,323 admissions from Friday to Sunday, elevating its total audience count to 3.02 million. This achievement places it just behind the 2003 film "A Tale of Two Sisters," which holds the record as the most-watched Korean horror film with 3.14 million admissions.

"Salmokji" premiered on April 8 and follows a filming crew, led by the character Soo-in (played by Kim Hye-yoon), who ventures to a location with the intent to finish a shoot within a deadline. However, they find themselves ensnared in a swamp-like terror as time slips away. The film's setting, Salmokji, is a reservoir in Yesan County, South Chungcheong Province, known among locals as a paranormal hotspot with a history of ghost sightings.

In the overall box office rankings, "The Devil Wears Prada 2," a prequel to the 2006 Hollywood comedy "The Devil Wears Prada," led the weekend chart with 195,514 admissions. It was followed by the animation "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," which garnered 184,014 admissions. Both films debuted in local theaters on April 29. "Salmokji" secured the third spot on the list.
