Sri Lankan police fired for playing piano for protesters

Sri Lanka Police today said that It fired a police officer who entertained protesters with live piano performances after protesters stormed the presidential palace last year.

Sri Lankan police officer RMD Dayaratne was assigned to help protect the president's residence on the day protesters occupied the palace and presidential residence. Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president at the time, was pressured by protesters and had to flee the country. This police officer instead took care of protecting the place. They returned to their seats at the grand piano inside the palace and played music to entertain the protesters who had flocked to occupy various areas and rooms inside the palace. Police officials said A long-running investigation concluded that Dayaratne had violated discipline.

Before the palace was raided in July 2022, protesters spent several months staying outside the palace overnight, demanding Mr Rajapaksa's resignation. Because the country is facing a serious economic crisis like never before. He had to flee to Singapore. and sent a letter of resignation from his position and later returned to Sri Lanka.
