Seoul: A special counsel team announced plans to summon former President Yoon Suk Yeol for questioning next week regarding his alleged interference in a military probe into the 2023 death of a young Marine. The team, led by special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon, intends to send a summons to Yoon demanding his appearance at 10 a.m. on Oct. 23, according to assistant special counsel Choung Min-young.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Choung stated during a press briefing that it is crucial to question former President Yoon and expressed hope that he would voluntarily appear for questioning. Lee's team, formed nearly four months ago, is investigating allegations that the Yoon administration reversed the initial findings of a military probe into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, aiming to absolve a Marine commander of responsibility.

This marks the first instance of the team questioning Yoon, who reportedly became enraged during a meeting with senior aides after being briefed on the initial findings. The former president was previously placed under arrest in July on charges related to his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law in December.

Yoon has since resisted cooperating with investigators' questioning and his trials related to the martial law charges. The late Marine, Cpl. Chae Su-geun, died in July 2023 during a search mission for victims of torrential rain.
