Special Counsel to Question CIO Chief in Marine Death Investigation

Seoul: A special counsel team announced plans to question the head of the anti-corruption agency this week, focusing on allegations related to a probe into the death of a young Marine in 2023.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the special counsel, Lee Myeong-hyeon, and his team intend to summon Oh Dong-woon, head of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), as a suspect for questioning. Oh is accused of failing to promptly notify the Supreme Prosecutors Office when a CIO official became subject to a criminal complaint in July of the previous year, a legal requirement.

Democratic Party lawmakers had lodged a complaint against Song Chang-jin, a former CIO senior prosecutor, accusing him of lying under oath at the National Assembly. Song had previously claimed ignorance of Lee Jong-ho's involvement in the case regarding the Marine's death. However, Song had served as Lee's lawyer before his tenure at the CIO, casting doubt on his testimony.

Lee's team suspects that Oh's delayed notification to the prosecution may have been an attempt to stall the investigation. In a recent text to CIO officials, Oh expressed confidence that the issue could be adequately clarified.
