Seoul:A special counsel team has announced plans to inspect approximately 2.5 million ballots at a vote counting center this week. This examination is part of an ongoing investigation into ballot shortages that occurred during the local elections held on June 3.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the examination will be conducted by special counsel Lee Tae-han's team on Wednesday at the Olympic Park Handball Gymnasium, which functioned as a vote counting center during the elections. The focus of the inspection will be to verify 2.47 million ballots and related equipment for any irregularities, including potential forgery. Observers from the National Assembly, alongside lawmakers and journalists, will be present during this process.
The special counsel team clarified that the examination is not intended as a recount of the votes, which is only conducted in response to objections to election results. The team emphasized their commitment to addressing public concerns over the fairness and management of the elections, expressing their intent to thoroughly investigate any suspicions.
Lee Tae-han's team was formed last month following the public outcry caused by the ballot shortages, which led to some voters being unable to cast their votes. The team has a 150-day mandate to investigate these issues and other allegations against the National Election Commission, including claims of manipulating voter turnout data.
