Special Counsel Summons Ex-President Yoon for Questioning Over Martial Law Allegations

Seoul: A special counsel team has notified former President Yoon Suk Yeol to appear for questioning next week regarding allegations tied to his failed martial law bid. Special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team announced on Saturday that it has issued a summons for Yoon to present himself at the Seoul High Prosecutors Office on Wednesday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the team aims to interrogate Yoon on charges of inciting foreign aggression by allegedly ordering a drone deployment to Pyongyang in October, prior to his brief declaration of martial law in December. This will mark the first instance investigators have sought to question him regarding these specific allegations.

Yoon has been detained since July and is currently facing trial on charges of leading an insurrection and exploiting his authority during the martial law attempt. It is uncertain whether Yoon will comply with the summons, as he has consistently refused to cooperate with the special counsel's investigation and has abstained from attending his insurrection trial since July.

The investigation team suspects Yoon of directly instructing the Drone Operations Command to send drones to Pyongyang, allegedly to provoke a military response from North Korea and fabricate a justification for imposing martial law.

Several military figures, including former drone command chief Maj. Gen. Kim Yong-dae, former Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Adm. Kim Myung-soo, and JCS operations chief Lt. Gen. Lee Seung-oh, have already been questioned concerning these allegations. These commanders have denied any connection between the drone activities and Yoon's martial law intentions, maintaining that the operations were part of standard responses to North Korea's balloon campaigns directed at South Korea.
