Seoul: A special counsel team on Monday accused the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of actively cooperating in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed 2024 martial law bid.
According to Yonhap News Agency, special counsel Kwon Chang-young's team has recently detected signs that the NIS prepared a list of hundreds of individuals labeled as "security threats" at the time of Yoon's martial law declaration on December 3, 2024. The details of this list have not been elaborated upon.
Assistant special counsel Kim Ji-mi revealed in a press briefing that signs indicate the NIS actively participated in the emergency martial law. The team is currently investigating who ordered the creation of this list, including the involvement of then NIS Director Cho Tae-yong.
Kim further mentioned that the NIS selected officials for dispatch to the martial law command following Yoon's declaration. The special counsel team, launched in February, aims to probe allegations surrounding Yoon, his unsuccessful martial law attempt, and his spouse, areas not thoroughly examined in prior special counsel investigations.
