South Korea’s Historical Milestones in Modern History

Seoul: The Independence Army of Korea made a triumphant return from China after the restoration of Korea's sovereignty from Japanese colonial rule, which ended in August 1945. This voluntary force played a crucial role in the struggle against Japanese troops in Manchuria and Shanghai, operating under the command of the Korean Provisional Government.

According to Yonhap News Agency, in 1948, South Korea marked a significant achievement by sending its athletes to participate in the Olympic Games held in London. This event was noteworthy as it was the first time the country competed in the prestigious quadrennial event, symbolizing its growing presence on the international stage.

In 1965, a landmark treaty was signed in Tokyo between South Korea and Japan, normalizing diplomatic relations after 20 years of regained sovereignty from the colonial regime. As part of this agreement, Japan extended US$800 million in grants and loans to South Korea as economic cooperation funds.

The 2002 World Cup brought a historic moment for South Korea as co-hosts; the nation defeated Spain in a penalty shootout, becoming the first Asian team to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.

Tragedy struck in 2004 when Kim Sun-il, a South Korean employee of a Baghdad-based foodstuff supplier for the U.S. Army, was found dead in Iraq. His death followed a militant group's threat to behead him unless the Seoul government retracted its plan to send more troops to Iraq.

In a groundbreaking 2006 decision, South Korea's Supreme Court allowed legal gender changes for transsexuals, marking a significant step forward for transgender rights in the country.

A grim incident occurred in 2014 when an army deserter was apprehended after killing five soldiers and wounding seven others in a shooting rampage at a general outpost on the border with North Korea, one of South Korea's deadliest such incidents.

In 2022, South Korea confirmed its first case of monkeypox infection from a foreigner arriving at Incheon International Airport from Germany, highlighting the ongoing challenges of global health monitoring and response.
