On this day in 1981, President Chun Doo-hwan made a bold move by proposing a summit with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Il-sung. However, the proposal was met with rejection by Kim on July 1 of that same year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, another notable achievement occurred in 2005 when South Korean pitcher Park Chan-ho secured his 100th major league win. Park, who debuted in the U.S. in 1994, became the first South Korean and only the second Asian, after Japan's Hideo Nomo, to reach this milestone in Major League Baseball.

In 2007, the 6th Asia Cooperation Dialogue commenced in Seoul, bringing together representatives from 30 regional nations. The dialogue focused on strategies to bridge the information gap and enhance economic and security cooperation among the participating countries.

Fast forward to 2014, the political climate in South Korea saw a pivotal moment with the first nationwide elections under President Park Geun-hye. The ruling Saenuri Party emerged victorious in eight out of 17 key races for big-city mayors and provincial governors, while the main opposition, New Politics Alliance for Democracy, captured nine posts, including the crucial Seoul mayorship.
