Jakarta:South Korea's spy agency has dismissed a local report claiming that the United States has limited intelligence sharing with Seoul exclusively to missile-related information about North Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) rejected the report amidst concerns of friction in intelligence cooperation following the revelation of a North Korean uranium enrichment facility. This disclosure by Unification Minister Chung Dong-young in March reportedly led to Washington restricting some intelligence access for Seoul.
The NIS confirmed it was not included in a June meeting with Washington and Tokyo on North Korean cyberthreats. Despite this, a senior U.S. official emphasized the expectation for Seoul to maintain the alliance standards.
The NIS stated that apart from acknowledged restrictions, South Korea and the U.S. continue to cooperate on various intelligence matters, including missiles, military capabilities, international relations, cybersecurity, and counterintelligence.
The agency also refuted claims of a reduction in the overall volume of intelligence shared by the U.S., asserting that intelligence sharing remains reciprocal and beneficial in multiple areas.
